Dear families,

My name is Deborah Baraibar, this is my 5th year teaching Visual Arts at St. John’s, and I welcome you to this school year.

Since before I became a teacher, I have been amazed at kids’ ingenuity and perspective. In art class, children are able to develop their creativity, make decisions and solve problems, which are valuable skills in our modern world.

In Junior High, we dive deeper into the different art movements from the late 19th century until now. Students research and analyze artwork from different artists reflecting on historic events that influenced them and make critiques of their own creations and their peers’. As always in this class, the effort invested on projects and assignments is one of the most important aspects of the art grade.

“What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?”

~ Vincent Van Gogh

Art has a spiritual function, it opens the minds and hearts to the vast possibilities of human life. Literature, theater, cinematography, looking at art connect us with other people. These art forms can create spiritual changes on us. Art will always be there, you cannot stop people from making art because it is a human need. We need to paint, to make poems, to sing. Imagine the world without music, or books, or dance... art it is eternal, it is a need, it is like food, an spiritual food. If we do not have art, we will die spiritually. Paul Auster
