My name is Sam Garson and I have been involved in education for the last 18 years (at the time of publishing). I have had the great fortune of seeing education from a variety of settings and methods. I began my teaching career as a substitute teacher in Miami-Dade Public Schools and from there returned to my hometown of Boston, MA to complete my Master's in Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education. I began full-time classroom teaching at Mount Rainier High School in Des Moines, WA.
After 7 years of classroom teaching, I then transitioned out of the classroom and into informal education through my role as the Education Program Coordinator for the Ocean Exploration Trust. In this capacity, I was able to support teachers from around the world as they brought the excitement of ocean exploration to their students while connecting live or serving aboard Dr. Robert Ballard's E/V Nautilus. In this capacity, I truly began to see the transformational impact that real-world STEM challenges and learning can have on students and their trajectory in STEM as well as their belief in their ability to succeed in STEM fields.
In returning to the classroom on the remote, rural island of San Juan Island, WA I have found an amazing community and supportive professional environment at Friday Harbor High School. Here I am working hard to help my rural students realize their potential as citizens of the world while trying to help them find opportunities in real-world STEM learning and global competency-based in understanding the future of STEM development in the 21st Century.
