I follow the statement which I read “A teacher’s role in the learning process should be that of a map for a wandering traveler”. My vision as a physics teacher is to create a classroom which is lively and interactive. For me, teaching is not about lecturing to students; it is to facilitate learning by helping students through explaining the theories, concepts, and empirical material. Engaging students with real world examples and a healthy dose of humor seems to help most students overcome their initial lack of interest in the material.
I believe as a teacher it is my responsibility to challenge and support my students in pursuit of 3 learning goals.
1. Learn fundamental physics concepts.
2. Cultivate an interest in topic and an understanding of how it is useful.
3. Application of knowledge to understand the things happening around.
I always try to encourage students to think and work in the direction where their studies benefits them and society.
My observation with present generation students that have difficulty remaining focused. To keep them engaged I connect the subject to real world problems and challenge them to find engineering solutions. With this student not only remain excited about the subject matter but also try to understand the principle behind the concept, when they realize that being taught in class.
In this era of instant and global information access, teaching engineering students has become extremely challenging. So instead of focusing only on book-based teaching, I emphasize the importance of variety in teaching techniques to make learning enjoyable so as to motivate the students to learn. I utilize PowerPoint software and all other possible elements of multimedia (videos, web sites), google classroom for discussions. As I am trying to improve my usage of technology in classroom, I will be using kahoot and simulations as a new technique, so that students will understand the concept in a better way. After undergoing the second face of IICEEP, I would like to adopt some more active learning strategies in to my teaching such as collaborative learning, flipped classroom to promote self-learning and make learning as long lasting. When my students leave the classroom, they should be able to discuss and develop ideas to address problems in collaboration with their peers.
Periodically I assess student learning by formal and informal assessments. This will help me to identify the individual strength and weakness. I always ask anonymous feedback from students about assignments and my teaching style, and I then implement student suggestions to improve my service delivery and their learning outcomes to meet their needs. I give assignments that improve students’ problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
I firmly believe that academic life provides me platform for improving my own skills and knowledge. I like to work on my verbal communication skills so as to quickly connect and build rapport with the students. Having an opportunity to interact with creative bright young minds who are at the threshold of stepping into the real employment world is an added benefit of teaching, because students are great resources of research ideas. I take up an online course, as it offers on-going opportunities and provide a flexible way to gain knowledge and skills needed to do my work better. I am eager to continue searching for new ways to improve my teaching and mentoring skills in my classroom and beyond.
