Housing & Travel

Housing

Participants will need lodging for the institute. As the Sebago Lake region is a summer tourist destination, the most cost-effective option will be on-campus accommodations. Check here for updates on room descriptions and cost.

The nearest supermarket is four miles away.  There is little public transit to the campus, so you will need a car to run errands.

Wi-fi will be freely available on campus. Library access may be limited.

During the evening of June 20 we will be lodging in the dorms at at Salve Regina University as part of a field trip to Rhode Island.  The cost is $80.o0 per person.

Travel

Portland International Jetport (PWM) is the nearest airport to Saint Joseph's College. It is located 18 miles from the campus. Participants can secure transporation to the campus via taxi, Uber, or Lyft.  However, if participants wish to make evening or weekend day trips to Portland or other areas in Maine (it's called "Vacationland" after all), or even to run local errands, rental cars are strongly recomended.  Scholars choosing to arrive into other airports (e.g., Boston, Bangor) will need to rent a car to get to Saint Joseph's College.

Once the participants are confirmed, the proejct directors will facilitate pre-institute opportunities for communication.  During this time participants can coordinate with one another to share car rental costs, if they so choose.

Weather Conditions

Summer conditions in Maine in June and early July are generally warm, varying from dry to humid during the day, with mild evenings. Average high temperatures during June and early July in Standish are 75° F with lows of 51° F.  It is not unusual to have rain during this period, so a light rain jacket or umbrella is recommended.

Stipends

Stipends are intended to compensate participants for their time commitment and to help defray the costs of participation, which may include expenses such as travel, lodging, and meals.  The total stipend for each institute participant is $2,850, and it is taxable as income.
