The economy of Belize is heavily reliant on the banana sector. It used to make up a sizable amount of the nation's export revenue. For example, 16% of Belize's total exports in 1999 came from the banana industry1. There have been variations in the industry's share of the GDP in more recent times.
With $84.3 million contributed to the Belizean economy, the banana industry—one of the country's traditional crops—is the second-largest economic output value. On the other hand, the industry saw a 2% decline in 2019 compared to the year 2018. The overall rise in banana pricing and exports was 4%; however, the economic output was negatively impacted by a 33% decline in local apple banana production. Thus, the whole economic production fell by 2%.

Exports of bananas rose from 5 million boxes in 2020 to 5.37 million in 2021, a 7% rise. The total area increased by 3.85 acres from 7,518 in 2020 to 7,809 in 2021.
