"We believe in purposeful learning that is challenging and enables each individual to become connected and positive lifelong learners.
We value creativity, diversity, flexibility and an awareness of self, others and the world we live in."
Nurturing the Whole Child
At SJB, we understand that a child's well-being is made up of four key components:
Academic
Social
Emotional
Spiritual
When these areas are in balance, children flourish. However, if one area is strained, their learning and development can be impacted. Working in partnership with your child's school is essential, and together, we can support your child's growth and address any concerns. Feel free to reach out to your child's teacher or a member of the leadership team.
SJB Expected Behaviours
These shared standards help us all understand how to behave responsibly, respectfully, and safely across different areas of the school. Our Behaviour Chart breaks these values down by location, guiding positive actions and responses, and fostering a supportive school community.
Promoting Well-Being & Social-Emotional Learning
At SJB, we prioritise social and emotional learning (SEL), which supports students in understanding and managing their emotions, setting positive goals, developing empathy, and building strong relationships. Our weekly classroom lessons focus on enhancing self-awareness, responsible decision-making, and respectful relationships. We also follow the Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) curriculum, which provides a structured framework to develop these vital skills. Additionally, we teach resilience tools like the “Learning Pit” and “Zones of Regulation” to help students navigate challenges and build their capacity to thrive emotionally and socially.
Supporting Students
Sometimes, students need additional support for behaviour, academic challenges, or social-emotional needs. We facilitate this through Program Support Group (PSG) meetings, involving parents, teachers, and specialists like speech therapists or psychologists. These meetings help set goals and strategies to support your child's growth and well-being.
Student Voice & Engagement
Our Student Representative Council (SRC) empowers students to share their ideas, participate in school activities, and promote positive change. Students are elected as class or school leaders, helping with fundraising, charity events, and representing student perspectives at school meetings.
Seasons for Growth program
We offer Seasons for Growth, a small group education program that supports children and young people to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to understand and respond well to experiences of change, loss and grief.
Seasons for Growth supports children and young people who have experienced change and loss, including, although not limited to friendship changes; family separation; loss or death of someone they care about; loss of a pet; relocation and forced migration; living away in out of home care; physical or mental illness. We suggest that children and young people impacted by bereavement wait 6-12 months before participating in a Seasons for Growth program. The program runs for 8 weeks.
Community & Active Involvement
Our Walking School Bus is a fun, active way for students, especially preps, to walk to school with trained volunteers. It promotes safety, community, and healthy habits. We encourage parent volunteers to join and help make this program a success.
Growth Mindset & Resilience
We promote a growth mindset—the belief that abilities can be developed through effort and persistence. Using tools like the “Learning Pit” and praising effort rather than just results, we teach children that mistakes are part of learning. Adding the word "yet" turns a fixed mindset statement into a growth opportunity—e.g., "I can't do it yet."
The Learning Pit visual helps children understand that struggle is part of learning. When faced with challenges, they can feel frustrated but are encouraged to try new strategies, ask for help, and persevere. This builds resilience and a positive attitude toward learning, helping them succeed in the end.
Creating a Positive Growth Environment
By fostering a supportive environment that emphasises well-being, growth mindsets, and resilience, we aim to help every child thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. Together, with open communication and shared goals, we can support your child's journey of growth and success.
At SJB, all students strive to be successful and effective learners in all aspects of their lives. Our SJB Dispositions help us to do this.
