The secondary school results and university entrance exam as a predictors of university achievement in psychology students

Abstract

After finishing secondary school students can apply to study at university. In Slovakia, before entering any school of higher education applicants have to pass entrance examination. These examinations have very different forms at particular schools. Students are usually chosen based on the results of their study at secondary schools as well as those of their entrance exam. In recent poster, we examined relationships between the secondary school results, university entrance test and university achievement (the mean of the grades from all exams during the university study). Data from 250 undergraduated psychology students of Trnava University were analyzed. Using multiple linear regression the university achievement was modeled as a function of secondary school results and university entrance exam. Results are discussed from the perspective of the effectiveness of entrance exams for choosing successful psychology students.
