Problem Description: _

Design an long flight-time unmanned aerial vehicle with hybrid power.

Our Solution:

Used double-boom configuration for good stability and long gliding time. Placed two motors for a better maneuver performance (electric motor and methanol-powered motor). Installed flight control system and adjusted the power distribution for different cases. Used video transmission system for first-person view flight and aerial photograph.

Fig 1 The Final Work

My Contribution:

(1) Designed the aircraft structure (the plane body part, Fig 2). I studied several works in our lab, and made ourselves with the help of Dr. Wu, our team advisor.

(2) Made the prototype: Drew the design draft on CAD, printed all the parts via laser engraving machines and assembled them manually.

(3) Installed and adjusted electronic devices, such as auto-pilot system, steeling gears and so on. I designed a simple rpm detection system on Arduino to monitor the motor.

(4) Flight test and repair. We spent several months for flight test. Until our operator handled how to take off and land the aircraft, we faced the debris of our work after each flight test.

Honor:

Our project was the excellent project for the 2013' Shanghai Undergraduate Innovation Program and won a second prize for SJTU Hsue-shen Tsien Student Innovation competition.

We had a patent for this work.
