Middle Georgia Raceway
A friend of mine, Tim Thornton owns an old race track in Byron Georgia, the Middle Georgia Motor Speedway. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was the site of the first NASCAR race of the season. Richard Petty and Bobby Allison won multiple races there until NASCAR retired the track in November of 1971. In 1970, Jimi Hendrix and the Allman Brothers performed in a soybean field next to the track for the second annual Atlanta International Pop Festival. 300,000 people attended and overwhelmed the town of 2000 residents. When the track was built in 1966, the owners installed a moonshine production facility in a bunker under turn three, which was discovered by federal agents a year later - adding to the rich lore and history of stock car racing.
Tim asked if I could bring my drone to the track and do some filming - which will be the second time the raceway has been filmed. Here's the first:
