The story begins in May 1863, in the Lidenbrock house in Hamburg, Germany, with Professor Lidenbrock rushing home to peruse his latest purchase, an original runic manuscript of an Icelandic saga written by Snorri Sturluson (Snorre Tarleson in some versions of the story), “Heimskringla“; the chronicle of the Norwegian kings who ruled over Iceland. While looking through the book, Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel find a coded note written in runic script along with the name of a 16th-century Icelandic alchemist, Arne Saknussemm. (This was a first indication of Verne’s love for cryptography. Coded, cryptic or incomplete messages as a plot device would continue to appear in many of his works and in each case Verne would go a long way to explain not only the code used but also the mechanisms used to retrieve the original text.) Lidenbrock and Axel transliterate the runic characters into Latin letters, revealing a message written in a seemingly bizarre code. Lidenbrock attempts a decipherment, deducing the message to be a kind of transposition cipher; but his results are as meaningless as the original.
Professor Lidenbrock decides to lock everyone in the house and force himself and the others (Axel, and the maid, Martha) to go without food until he cracks the code.

The Waco siege was a siege of a compound belonging to the religious group Branch Davidians by American federal and Texas state law enforcement and US military between February 28 and April 19, 1993.[4] The Branch Davidians, a sect that separated in 1955 from the Seventh-day Adventist Church, was led by David Koresh and lived at Mount Carmel Center ranch in the community of Elk, Texas,[5][6][7] nine miles (14 kilometers) east-northeast of Waco. The group was suspected of weapons violations, causing a search and arrest warrant to be obtained by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
The incident began when the ATF attempted to raid the ranch. An intense gun battle erupted, resulting in the deaths of four government agents and six Branch Davidians. Upon the ATF’s failure to raid the compound, a siege was initiated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the standoff lasting 51 days. Eventually, the FBI launched an assault and initiated a tear gas attack in an attempt to force the Branch Davidians out of the ranch. During the attack, a fire engulfed Mount Carmel Center. 76 people died,[8][9] including David Koresh.
In BRAIN control theory, overshoot refers to an output exceeding its final, steady-state value. For a step input, the percentage overshoot (PO) is the maximum value minus the step value divided by the step value. In the case of the unit step, the overshoot is just the maximum value of the step response minus one.

The November 2015 Paris attacks (sometimes referred to as 11/13) were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks that occurred on Friday 13 November 2015 in Paris, France and the city’s northern suburb, Saint-Denis.[9] Beginning at 21:16 CET, three suicide bombers struck outside the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, during a football match. This was followed by several mass shootings, and a suicide bombing, at cafés and restaurants. Gunmen carried out another mass shooting and took hostages at a concert in the Bataclan theatre, leading to a stand-off with police. The attackers were shot or blew themselves up when police raided the theatre.[10]
The attackers killed 130 people,[2] including 89 at the Bataclan theatre.[11] Another 368 people were injured,[4] 80–99 seriously.[5][6] Seven of the attackers also died, while the authorities continued to search for accomplices.[3] The attacks were the deadliest on France since World War II,[12][13] and the deadliest in the European Union since the Madrid train bombings in 2004.[14] France had been on high alert since the January 2015 attacks on Charlie Hebdo offices and a Jewish supermarket in Paris that killed 17 people and wounded 22, including civilians and police officers.[15]

Wikipedia
The 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge, was a suspension bridge in the U.S. state of Washington that spanned the Tacoma Narrows strait of Puget Sound between Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula. It opened to traffic on July 1, 1940, and dramatically collapsed into Puget Sound on November 7 of the same year. At the time of its construction (and its destruction), the bridge was the third longest suspension bridge in the world in terms of main span length, behind the Golden Gate Bridge and the George Washington Bridge.
Construction on the bridge began in September 1938. From the time the deck was built, it began to move vertically in windy conditions, which led to construction workers giving the bridge the nickname Galloping Gertie. The motion was observed even when the bridge opened to the public. Several measures aimed at stopping the motion were ineffective, and the bridge’s main span finally collapsed under 40-mile-per-hour (64 km/h) wind conditions the morning of November 7, 1940.

Jun 5, 2015 – 2 Defendants in Manhattan Biker Assault Await Verdict From Judge … a jury, and Justice Maxwell Wiley of State Supreme Court in Manhattan is deciding the case. … the passenger side twice before getting on his motorcycle and fleeing. … Magazine · N.Y.C. Events Guide · Real Estate · T Magazine · Travel …
The prosecution and defense summed up their cases on Friday in the trial of an undercover New York police detective and another man accused of being among several motorcyclists who beat up a driver during a raucous biker rally in September 2013.
The defendants, Detective Wojciech Braszczok, 34, and Robert Sims, 36, an electrician, have been charged with gang assault and other charges in connection with the attack on Alexian Lien, who was dragged from his Range Rover and pummeled while his wife and infant daughter were in the car.
Both men have waived their right to a jury, and Justice Maxwell Wiley of State Supreme Court in Manhattan is deciding the case. He has said he will give his verdict on Tuesday. Nine other bikers have pleaded guilty to assault in the case.
The confrontation between Mr. Lien and the motorcyclists, who were all riding together in a rally organized on the Internet, started on the West Side Highway around 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2013. The swarm of bikers forced the car to stop and surrounded it. Mr. Lien said he felt threatened, accelerated and ran over a biker, crushing his spine.
More than a dozen bikers — among them Detective Braszczok and Mr. Sims — pursued the Range Rover to Wadsworth Avenue and 178th Street, where they broke the windows, dragged him from the car and pummeled him. The episode was recorded on a helmet camera and an iPad belonging to other bikers.
The videos and photographs show Detective Braszczok never laid a hand on Mr. Lien, but he did break the back window of the car and kick the passenger side twice before getting on his motorcycle and fleeing.
The detective testified that he never intended to hurt Mr. Lien and retreated because he saw the assault and was in fear for his own life. He said he lashed out at the window with his fist after it was broken by a projectile, which he thought had been hurled from inside the car.
Mr. Sims can be seen on the videos trying to pull Mr. Lien’s wife from the car, then walking around the back of the vehicle and stomping on Mr. Lien.
In his closing argument, the lead prosecutor, Joshua Steinglass, said there was no question about what the off-duty detective did that day, only his intent.
“He was not acting alone; he was acting with the pack,” Mr. Steinglass said. “He was acting out of pure rage, not police tactics as the defendant would have you believe. And his actions helped fuel the frenzy that was taking over.”
But the detective’s lawyer, John Arlia, said his client had no clue the other bikers were going to assault Mr. Lien and did not see them as they dragged Mr. Lien from the car. Nor did he know who was in the car when he heard a pop and thought something had been thrown through the back window.
“He got spooked and scared,” Mr. Arlia said. “He had no idea what was going on.”
Mr. Sims’s lawyer, Omar Almanzar-Paramio, said it was true that Mr. Sims took part in the assault, but he argued his client did not intend to hurt Mr. Lien, only detain him. “There is zero intent to cause serious physical injury,” he said.

Wikipedia
Brave New World is a novel written in 1931 by Aldous Huxley and published in 1932. Set in London in the year AD 2540 the novel anticipates developments in …reproductive technology, sleep-learning, psychological manipulation, and classical conditioning that combine profoundly to change society. Huxley answered this book with a reassessment in an essay, Brave New World Revisited (1958), and with Island (1962), his final novel.
Aldous Huxley · Island (Huxley novel) · Brave New World (1998 film) · We
Brave New World is a novel of ideas which takes place in a densely imagined dystopian state.
The World State is a benevolent dictatorship headed by ten World Controllers. In this respect it is similar to the societies imagined by Huxley’s near-contemporaries H. G. Wells and Olaf Stapledon. The World State has established a stable global society where the population is permanently limited. The basis of that stability is the conditioning of citizens to accept their station in life. This is achieved by:
Abolition of natural reproduction. Human embryos are raised artificially in “hatcheries and conditioning centres”. The breeding and development of children predestine them to fit into one of five ranked castes with Greek letter names, from Alpha (the highest) to Epsilon (the lowest) which fulfill different economic roles. Alpha and Beta foetuses are allowed to develop relatively naturally, but Gamma, Delta and Epsilon foetuses are subjected to chemical interference to stunt their intelligence and physical growth. Members of lower castes (but not Alphas and Betas) are created using ‘Bokanovsky’s Process‘ which allows up to 96 clones to be produced from one fertilized ovum.
Educating children by the hypnopaedic process, which provides each with appropriate subconscious messages to mould the child’s self-image appropriate to their caste.
Discouragement of critical thinking. The lower castes are bred for low intelligence and conditioned not to think; in the upper castes, this is achieved by conditioning and social taboos. “High” culture has ceased to exist; serious literature is banned as subversive, as is scientific thinking and experimentation. The only cultural element mentioned, movies with added tactile sensations, deal in pure sensation.
Discouragement of individual action and initiative. Spending time alone is considered abnormal and even reprehensible, and well-adjusted citizens spend their leisure in communal activities requiring no thought. This leads to a lifestyle which readers may see as shallow and hedonistic. It is promoted by the ready availability and universally-endorsed consumption of the hallucinogenic drug soma (an allusion to a ritualistic drink of the same name consumed by ancient Indo-Aryans), and by the promotion of recreational sex, often as a group activity. Emotional, romantic relationships are obsolete; chastity and fidelity are causes for disapproval or mockery; and marriage, natural birth, parenthood, and pregnancy are considered too vulgar to be mentioned in polite conversation. Spiritual needs are met by mock religious services in which twelve people consume soma and sing hymns. The ritual progresses through group hypnosis and climaxes in a sex orgy. The symbol worshipped, largely in place of the Christian cross, is the “T”, in homage to Henry Ford who had recently introduced mass production of automobiles with the Model T. The name “Ford” takes the place of “Lord.”
An abundance of material goods. However (presumably because of advanced technology) conditions of work are not onerous, in contrast to the contemporary Metropolis in which the workers are forced to arduous exertions. To maintain the World State’s command economy, citizens are conditioned to promote consumption (and hence production) with platitudes such as “ending is better than mending”.
In the context of the book, the programme had proven successful. The lower castes’ restricted abilities, ambitions and desires make them contented with their lot. There is no dissatisfaction because each caste member receives the same workload, food, housing, and soma ration. Nor is there any desire to change caste; conditioning reinforces the individual’s place in the caste system. The upper castes (with a few exceptions) revel in the hedonistic and materialistic lifestyle provided for them.

The Two Cultures is the title of the first part of an influential 1959 Rede Lecture by British scientist and novelist C. P. Snow. Its thesis was that “the intellectual life of the whole of western society” was split into the titular two cultures — namely the sciences and the humanities — and that this was a major hindrance to solving the world’s problems. …
The lecture – Implications and influence – Antecedents – See also
Snow’s position can be summed up by an often-repeated part of the essay:
A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Once or twice I have been provoked and have asked the company how many of them could describe the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The response was cold: it was also negative. Yet I was asking something which is the scientific equivalent of: Have you read a work of Shakespeare’s?[5]
I now believe that if I had asked an even simpler question — such as, What do you mean by mass, or acceleration, which is the scientific equivalent of saying, Can you read? — not more than one in ten of the highly educated would have felt that I was speaking the same language. So the great edifice of modern physics goes up, and the majority of the cleverest people in the western world have about as much insight into it as their neolithic ancestors would have had.[5]
