John Locke's social contract theories differed in one key aspect from others. Locke felt that mankind's natural state was of freedom and individuals entered into a contract with other people to ensure that freedom. The Basis of Early Social Contract Theories The concept of a social contract started with the Greek philosopher Socrates.
For John Locke, 1632-1704,
the State of Nature is
a very different type of place (sunlight photon languages.

water THOUGHT molecules, etc),
and so his argument concerning the social contract and
the nature of men's relationship to authority are consequently quite different.
While Locke uses Hobbes' methodological device of the State of Nature, as do virtually all social contract theorists, he uses it to a quite different end.
