The US Army Corps of Engineers
The US Army Corps of Engineers announced that releases will begin once again Friday from Lake Okeechobee into the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie rivers.
Releases had been suspended over the weekend after government officials highlighted the blue-green algae spotted throughout the Caloosahatchee River and into Cape Coral canals.
The lake’s stage is approaching 14.5 feet, the USACE said.
The target flow for the Caloosahatchee Estuary over a 14-day average will be 3,000 cubic feet per second as measured at the Moore Haven Lock.
“Over the upcoming 14-day period, we will operate with discharges slightly lower than the limits in LORS (Lake Okeechobee Regulation Schedule),” said Colonel Jason Kirk.
“We will implement pulse releases with variable flows that simulate rainfall events in an effort to reduce some of the environmental impacts.”
