Amoco Corp., acknowledging one of the costliest blunders in its 100-year history, said Monday it will strip its headquarters tower of its cherished marble skin and replace the weakening snow-white panels with light-colored granite.
The Chicago-based multinational said the project will cost $60 million to $80 million and take three years.
The 80-story Amoco Building-at 1,136 feet the fourth-tallest building in the world and an integral part of the Chicago skyline-cost less than $120 million to erect only 15 years ago.
decision to reclad the building came a year after Amoco disclosed that the exterior was deteriorating badly. Last year, workers secured each of the tower`s 43,000 sagging marble panels with stainless-steel straps.
Shelby Pierce, Amoco Oil Co.`s manager of engineering, who has overseen the project, said the building`s new skin of North Carolina granite will look, from a distance, even whiter than the Italian marble exterior.
But up close, the replacement stone has a salt-and-pepper appearance typical of granite. Pierce said that to avoid making the difference too apparent to pedestrians, the whitest slabs will be reserved for street-level application.
Granite from Mt. Airy, N.C., was selected because of its color and its strength. “I wanted to make sure that 15 years from now someone else doesn`t have to go through what I`m going through,“ Pierce said.
Work will begin toward the end of March with the erection of lighted, construction-site canopies that will surround the building at 200 E. Randolph Dr.
Next fall, building-tall hoists will be attached to the skyscraper`s corners. These will lift and hold in place four platforms on which workers will stand to take off the 275-pound marble panels and put up the 400-pound, 2-inch-thick pieces of granite.
The recladding will begin in April, 1990, starting at the third floor. Pierce estimated that it will take about 16 months altogether.

Colonel March of Scotland Yard is a 1950s British television series based on author John Dickson Carr‘s (aka Carter Dickson) fictional detective Colonel March from his book The Department of Queer Complaints (1940). Carr was a mystery author who specialised in locked-room whodunnits and other ‘impossible’ crimes: murder mysteries that seemed to defy possibility. The stories of the television series followed in the same vein with Detective March solving cases that baffle Scotland Yard and the British police. The department itself is sometimes referred to as “D3”.
The series was made at Southall Studios in Middlesex, England (and, later, Nettlefold Studios in Walton-on-Thames, England) was produced by Fountain Films for ITV. The series premiered in 1955 with a total of 26 episodes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Two_Cultures
Wikipedia
The Two Cultures is the title of the first part of an influential 1959 Rede Lecture by British scientist and novelist C. P. Snow. Its thesis was that “the intellectual life of the whole of western society” was split into the titular two cultures — namely the sciences and the humanities — and that this was a major hindrance to solving the world’s problems. …
The lecture – Implications and influence – Antecedents – See also
Snow’s position can be summed up by an often-repeated part of the essay:
A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Once or twice I have been provoked and have asked the company how many of them could describe the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The response was cold: it was also negative. Yet I was asking something which is the scientific equivalent of: Have you read a work of Shakespeare’s?[5]
I now believe that if I had asked an even simpler question — such as, What do you mean by mass, or acceleration, which is the scientific equivalent of saying, Can you read? — not more than one in ten of the highly educated would have felt that I was speaking the same language. So the great edifice of modern physics goes up, and the majority of the cleverest people in the western world have about as much insight into it as their neolithic ancestors would have had.[5]
