Information and Library Science is a field that transcends and illuminates a path for all. From serving and uniting communities to educating and informing the public about current news, trends, and data retrieval methods, this field practices revolutionary strides to keep patrons afloat with modern trends and technologies that dominate the world. Information professionals adopt the roles of archivists, educators, emissaries of customer care and social welfare, to ensure that their mission is at play.
As a future information professional, my goal is to expand my intellect and share creative innovations that will light a pathway for diverse groups. During my time as a student in this program, I have worked as a Library Aide in a Public Library where I have practiced collaborating with other LIS professionals to share ideas for programs that will attract diverse age groups. I esteem these opportunities as they have taught me great lessons about the community, the people I have collaborated with, and myself.
I attribute my decision to pursue this field to the community, the people I have helped and grown to know. While others claim that their passion for reading brought them to this point, I recognize that the gratitude and enjoyment I find from serving members of my community is what brought me here, and I couldn't be more thankful. The patrons I serve live in underserved communities, and I want to provide them with new opportunities that are scarce in their neighborhood due to economic factors. I want to be the one that attracts children to literacy by letting them take over storytime and aggregating tools that will transform this program into a theatrical experience. I want to introduce creative writing and diverse forms of artistic expressions to teens so that they could grow up to be future writers and artists. I want to implement web-based programs so that adults that lack tech-literacy can learn how to use modern technologies and help them prosper in future endeavors. You don't need to be rich to feel enriched with opportunities. Collaborative team efforts can stretch the boundaries of our capabilities.
I want to build relationships not only with my community but with surrounding communities as well so that we could learn from each other and help expand our opportunities. I intend to do this by reaching out to community members at my library, schools, and city hall meetings.I enjoy immersing myself with the community and intend to continue this practice as a future librarian.
