Program Timeline
1. Discuss Objectives and instructions – 5 minutes
CHEF – Mission is exposing youth to benefits and personal enjoyment of outdoors activities – Our area is Fishing – How to Cast.
a. Familiarity with rods and reels
A. Grip
Never take this hand off the rod when casting
Your finger should hold the line lightly – not tightly.
B. Bail
C. Drag – the ability to apply pressure to the fish without breaking the line.
b. General instructions
A. ALWAYS – I mean ALWAYS check behind and around you before you cast.
B. Motion is like throwing baseball with a little whip or sharp motion at the end.
C. Leave 12 to 18 inches from the lure to the tip of the rod.
D. Use two hands to cast – it helps with distance and accuracy.
E. Always keep your eyes on the target or area where you want the lure to go.
F. Stop the line with your finger to minimize the excess slack line.
G. In order to avoid line twists, always use your second hand to close or flick the bail closed while raising the rod tip to straighten out the line.
2. Casting Demonstrations – 10 minutes

c. Illustration Spinning casting

3. Knot Tying – Time permitting
Palomar and Improved Clinch Knot
4. General Comments
a. When there is resistance, always use the rod to bring it in.
b. If your lure is stuck, ask for help – DO NOT go into the field on your own.
c. Do not continue to crank the reel if the line is not being picked up.
