Y2M is a program coordinated by faculty members from Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York, to encourage young people to pursue studies in mathematics, science and computer science. The program’s focus is on practical applications of mathematics and mathematics related career fields. Participants have the opportunity to attend interactive workshops given by Nassau Community College faculty. Past workshops have included topics such as: Game Theory, Topology, Data Analysis, Webpage Design, Aviation, Modeling, Circuit Design, Mathematics and Evolution, Radioactive Decay, Probability, Statistics and Engineering.
Student participants have an opportunity to meet students from other schools during the Math Contests. Each team is created so that the members are from different schools. Students work together to find answers to the problems.
Y2M has been generously supported by the administration of Nassau Community College, the Math/Computer Science/Information Technology, Engineering Science/Physics/Technology, Physical Sciences, Biology and Chemistry Departments as well as the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), Coppin State College, the National Security Counsel (NSA), Long Island Consortium for Interconnected Learning (LICIL) and the Long Island Fund for Women and Girls.
