In rural emergency medicine, I was regularly exposed to major and acute presentations, anaphylaxis, cardio-respiratory arrest and resuscitation, major and minor trauma, septic patient, shocked patient, unconscious patient, alcohol and substance abuse, anal pain and rectal bleeding, bruising and spontaneous bleeding, epistaxis, hematemesis and melena, joint swelling, atraumatic limb pain and swelling, oncologic emergencies, pre-hospital care, pregnancy, rashes, sexually transmitted diseases, visual loss, weakness not due to stroke, management of geriatric patients, comorbidity, abdominal pain including hernia, acute back pain, aggressive or disturbed behaviors in patients and cooperation with law-enforcement, black-outs and syncope, dizziness and vertigo, breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, delirious states, cough, cyanosis, diarrhea and constipation, falls, fever, seizures, headaches, head injuries, neck pain, jaundice, pain management, ear pain and infections, palpitations, pelvic pain, eye infections and trauma, mental health management and psychology, sore throats, ventilator support, vomiting and nausea, weakness and paralysis, wound assessment and management
Emergency training included airway management, anaphylaxis, shock, transfer medicine, arrhythmias, convulsions or seizures, stroke, pediatric emergencies (EPLS), extubation, management of respiratory and cardiac arrest, a thorough understanding of the pathophysiology of respiratory and cardiac arrest and the skills required to resuscitate patients in accordance with the latest European Resuscitation Council guidelines, control of infection, phlebotomy, interoseal line placement, connecting mechanical ventilator and selecting initial settings, safe use of drugs to facilitate mechanical ventilation, monitoring respiratory function, safe use of vasoactive drugs and electrolytes, delivery of a fluid challenge to an acutely unwell patient, actions required for accidental displacement of tracheal tube, iGel and other laryngeal mask usage, coniotomy, major trauma, cardio-thoracic injuries, abdominal trauma, spinal immobilization, maxillofacial injuries, burns, upper and lower limb injuries , interpretation of abnormal blood gas results in emergency department, interpretation of X-ray, CT and MRI results, abnormal blood glucose and ketosis maintenance, emergency airway care, needle-stick injury protocols, testicular pain, urinary retention, ultrasound knowledge and focused assessment using sonography, and FAST ultrasound.
