Volunteer Information

Thanks for volunteering. We don't have a volunteer schedule – please come as often as you can. We usually don't make specific assignments – just jump in where you are comfortable.

Starting as “Beginners”, students advance through the ranks of the chess program by completing the requirements for the next rank. The ranks are: Beginner, Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Rook, Queen, and King. Most of the requirements involve learning a new chess skill. Each student has a sign-off sheet that lists all the requirements they are working on. When they complete a requirement, it is initialed by a parent volunteer.

Volunteer Opportunities

Work with Students Individually or in Small Groups

This is where we need the most help. We need parents to help guide students as they work to complete the requirements on their sign-off sheet. Chess experience is helpful, but not necessary! There are guide booklets for each level that teach everything you need to know. Parents unfamiliar with chess will want to start at the beginner level and work their way up. Get started by becoming familiar with the guide book for the level you’re helping with. It has more detailed instructions. Feel free to start by just helping your own child. You can then help others are you become more comfortable.

Help at the Front Table

We need one to three volunteers to run the front table. This job involves administrative tasks such as helping students find their sign-off sheet, processing completed sign-off sheets, and helping to correct worksheets when needed. There are detailed instructions at the front table. Volunteers at the front table can work as a team or divide up the responsibilities – just be sure to communicate.

Teach a Group Lesson

Want to teach a more formal lesson to a larger group? Let us know and we can help you plan your lesson and get you setup with one of our “demo boards” and any other materials you might need.
