All Willow Springs students are invited to participate in chess meetings for free. Come have fun as you learn the exciting and challenging game of chess! Chess meetings will include practice matches as well as instruction on rules and strategy. Certificates are awarded as new skills are mastered. Chess sets and materials are provided.

We start the week after the Fun Run and end the last Friday in March, or the Friday before Spring break, whichever comes first.

All grades and experience levels can participate. 1st grade and Kindergarten students are welcome, but a parent or grandparent should plan to attend with them initially. Since the chess lessons include written instructions, young students often need help reading the material and working through the first few levels.
You don't need to know how to play chess! Parents and grandparents simply help their student follow the lessons and practice what they learn. Once students can work through the lessons independently, they can attend on their own. Parents and grandparents are always welcome to continue attending, too!

Students must register before attending, even if they participated in chess last year.

Students work through structured chess lessons at their own pace, learning the rules and strategies of chess one step at a time. They practice what they learn and play with other students as they progress through the levels.

As students learn new chess skills they advance through the rank in this order:
Beginner
Pawn
Knight
Bishop
Rook
Queen
King & Junior Coach

All of our Kings are amazing Junior Coaches and they help the other ranks to progress in the program.

Willow Springs Chess is powered by parent and grandparent volunteers—and we can always use more help!
The first six weeks are especially important, as students are learning how the program works and getting started with their chess lessons. Volunteers primarily help students read their guidebooks, understand the lessons, and stay on track as they progress through the program.
Even just having a few extra adults in the room makes a BIG difference. When we have more volunteers, students are able to progress faster and get more individual help.
