Topic: WrestleMania XXXI

Soulliere, Danielle M., Blair, James A. “Muscle-Mania: The Male Body Ideal in

Professional Wrestling”. International Journal of Men’s Health 5.3 (2006):

268-286. Web.

Summary:

On television, nowhere are men's bodies more prominently on display than in professional wrestling. Qualitative content analyses of 118 episodes of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) programming, focusing on images and commentaries of male wrestling performers' bodies, revealed that televised professional wrestling presents a "hyper-male" body ideal that constructs men's bodies as big, strong, and muscular.

Facts or Quotes:

As a male-dominated sports-entertainment enterprise, professional wrestling, in the form of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), primarily showcases male performers, and men’s bodies are routinely on display.

Evaluation:

This source is somewhat timely because not much changed in terms of using male built bodies to carry along fans of the wrestling. Also it is credible because it is from an international journal of men’s health and I’m pretty sure they know all about the topic. In terms of relevance to my topic, it definitely meets the criteria.

Young, Mark S., Drew, Pinsky. “Narcissism and Celebrity” Journal of Research In

Personality” 40.5 (2006) 463-471. Web.

Summary:

In this article the authors used the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) to assess the degree of narcissism among celebrities. Results indicate that celebrities are significantly more narcissistic than MBA students and the general population. Contrary to findings in the population at large, in which men are more narcissistic than women, female celebrities were found to be significantly more narcissistic than their male counterparts.

Facts or Quotes:

“Celebrities are individuals who have achieved a level of fame that makes them well known in society”

Evaluation:

Similar to the one above, this source satisfies all the required criteria (timeliness, relevance, and credibility).

Stout, David “This Is the Greatest Professional Wrestling Entrance Ever.” Time

31 Mar. 2015: pN.PAG. 1p. Web

Summary:

This article comments on the greatest entrance of all time that was used in WrestleMania 31.

Facts or Quotes:

Who cares that the hitherto undefeated Rusev went on to lose the United States Championship belt to red-blooded American wrestler John Cena? In terms of his entrance, he was a winner all the way.

Evaluation:

On timeliness, this article can be regarded as a fingertip information because it is indeed recent. In regards to credibility, Stout David is a journalist and might be a wrestling fan so his facts and figures might be quite standard. It is relevant to the aspect I would be examining in my essay.

Ramachandran, Shalini. "Business News: WrestleMania Boosts WWE Viewers." Wall

Street Journal, Eastern edition ed. Mar 31 2015. ProQuest. Web.

Summary:

The TV industry has been closely watching WWE, as it was one of the first TV programmers to take its content "over the top" and offer an online service directly to consumers for $9.99 a month. Since it launched in February 2014, a number of big media companies from CBS to HBO have also pursued paths to stream their programming outside of the traditional pay TV bundle.

Facts or Quotes:

A free promotion in February for the streaming WWE Network also helped bring in 201,000 trial customers, 77% of which converted to paid subscriptions.

Evaluation:

This is the most relevant source that relates completely to my topic. It is adequately timely and the credibility is good enough to work with.

Benes, Ross. “How Much Wrestling is there at WrestleMania? The Count Puts a

Stopwatch on the Past Four WrestleManias to Time all the Body Slams, Suplexes

And Stare Downs." Wall Street Journal (Online)Mar 24 2015. ProQuest. Web.

Summary:

Recent Wall Street Journal studies found only about 11 minutes of action in an NFL game and about 18 minutes of action in a Major League Baseball game. So they try to figure out how much actual wrestling there is at WrestleMania event.

Facts or Quotes:

We put a stopwatch on the past four WrestleMania’s to time everything that happened during singles matches. The conclusion: only about nine minutes, 36 seconds, or 54%, of each match involves actual wrestling.

Evaluation:

This is the leat relevant source that relates completely to my topic. It is adequately timely but I’m not certain the credibility is good enough for me to work with.
