We are a community choir and our aim is to derive pleasure from making music amongst friends and to perform concerts of a wide range of music three times a year.
The choir’s repertoire is based in the classical choral tradition but encompasses a wide range of music from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century, including much newly written music and several first performances of works composed by its long-standing accompanist, Frank Harvey. In keeping with the choir’s philosophy, solo parts are usually taken by singers from within the choir’s own ranks and concerts have frequently involved small-group and solo vocal contributions, as well as a variety of instrumental items. An important and popular part of the Choir’s programme has always been the Christmas concert, often including seasonal readings and always with audience participation in traditional carols.
Over the years the Choral Society has been keen to be involved in the local community, whether it be fund-raising initiatives, civic occasions such as the High Street Christmas celebration, the Carnival Procession, the town's Mayor Making ceremony or events connected with its twinning partnership with Blain in France, where the Choir has also performed. In recent years the Choir has been invited to take part in events further afield, including the Brunel 200th anniversary celebrations in Swindon, Choral Evensong in Newport Cathedral and the Enchanted Christmas at Westonbirt Arboretum.
