Corduroy Road
Pacific Highway work uncovers historic road (ABC News)
One hundred metres of wooden road, possibly built in 1907, has been discovered near Woolgoolga. The structure, known as a "corduroy road" was found running parallel to and ten metres away from the Woolgoolga Creek Road.
The Federal Minister for Transport, Anthony Albanese, said the temporary road was made by placing logs side by side and is an important piece of history. In addition he said the 'corduroy road' was built over boggy ground around the same time the British-Australian Timber Company tramway was being built.
Mr Albanese claimed Ainsworth Heritage evaluated the 100 metre section of road as locally significant. "Importantly, it's using a technique that is thought to date back from engineers as early as 4000 BC".
