The iPad Pilot helped us learn how the iPads can be used in a variety of ways to support not only curriculum learning outcomes but also the Portrait of a Graduate attributes. The following are some of the main "take aways" not only from the 5th grade but other Middle School grade level classes who are using the iPad cart. As noted, one can learn a lot about the iPads and other initiatives by listening to the two podcast recordings (Segment 1 and Segment 2) with the 5th grade teachers.
Mobility, 1:1 & Instant On: ACDS has had laptops and tablets on carts for many years so the students and teachers are comfortable in using the technology. With the iPad Pilot, 5th grade students were assigned their own iPads which made a big difference in that they had easy access to them throughout the day along with their photos, recorded videos and apps. Having the iPads power on instantly makes it easy for students to work independently moving easily from digital to analog work environments.
Access to the Internet: The Internet with access to our Haiku LMS, the PCR Grading System, Google Apps, Web 2.0 Tools, Web Resources, Online Database via our Library site, WebQuests, etc. supports our ICL goal that students gather, process, create and communicate information.
Apps: It turns out that the apps were not the biggest driver in instruction and assessment. The students use a variety of apps to support their language arts, social studies, math and Spanish skills. We are looking to further expand our use of apps as teachers research blogs and app review sites to match apps with student learning needs. The iPad Learning Community Google Document has a variety of links to resources to help teachers see how other educators are using the iPad and apps in their classrooms.
Photos, Video-recording & iMovie: Video projects provide students the opportunity to storyboard, write scripts, collaborate, manage a production and of course be creative in their effort to communicate. The iPad camera provides the opportunity to shoot video and to take photos. Student produced videos are shared via the classroom project or posted to the Internet to be shared with a wider audience. With students taking home their iPads in the coming school year, new opportunities to record data from field trips to be made into videos or online virtual field trips is just one more option for our Middle School teachers.
Screencasting: Students are using screen capturing apps to narrate stories around photographs, drawings, text., etc. This quick and easy assessment method is widely being used by students in the Middle School.
