🌳 Bluebell Woods
Discover one of Wirral’s prettiest woodland spots on this easy 2-mile circular route near Raby. Starting on School Lane, the walk leads through peaceful field paths and ancient woodland in Cherry Wood, returning along a scenic track past Hinderton Hall and the old water tower.
From the starting point on Upper Raby Road / School Lane, join marked footpath (Neston FP 59) at Cherry Farm. Walk down the surfaced track, past the farm buildings and round a gate. Continue down the path.
After about 0.25 miles / 5 mins, turn right between two ancient sandstone gate posts to join Neston FP 43 and Cherry Wood. Continue through this delightful wood. After 10 – 12 minutes, the official path takes a 90 degree turn to the right by a large oak tree, to a stile.
Leaving the wood, cross the stile, and turn left along the field edge to a kissing gate and marker post, opposite a house called “Roselea”.
Turn right and walk up the road, passing a former water tower on the right, now a residence.
At the brow of the hill, at a marker post, turn right into School Lane (Neston FP 65), a wide track which passes behind the grounds of Hinderton Hall. After about 0.75 miles, you will reach Upper Raby Road and the end of the walk.
An alternative to this route is to start and end in Raby Village near the Wheatsheaf pub. Take footpath Bebington FP 38 by Jasmine Cottage (a delightful single storey thatched cottage dating from 1611), turning right through a kissing gate onto FP 41 and joining the above route at Point 2 on the map. This adds about 1 mile to the distance.
Cherry Wood is one of Wirral’s prettiest woods and particularly so when the bluebells are out in abundance. There are extensive views to Liverpool and the Cheshire hills.
Parts of this walk can be muddy following wet weather so appropriate footwear is recommended.
