Winston's work demonstrates a good knowledge of design, colour and composition. His often repetitive, sensitive and exploratory brushwork are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He uses layers of colour strokes that build up to form complex fields, at once both a direct expression of the sensations of the observing eye and an abstraction from observed nature. The artworks convey Winston's careful study of his subject, a searching gaze and a determined struggle to deal with the complexity of human visual perception.
