Opportunity: Post-doc or research officer at ICTD (full time)

The International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD) is a global policy research network, devoted to improving the quality of tax policy and administration in developing countries through research, with a special focus on sub-Saharan Africa. ICTD is based at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), a leading development research institute globally.

The ICTD is looking for a researcher to join our wonderful team, ideally in October 2020, as a research officer or post-doctoral fellow. The researcher will engage primarily with quantitative research under two ICTD programs: the research program on tax administration and compliance (see details here), and the new DIGITAX program (see details here).

The location for the position is flexible: The ICTD’s primary hub is the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, UK, with a secondary hub at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto. We would also be open to the possibility of working remotely. Our priority is to hire an excellent researcher and team player. The position could be a research officer or post-doctoral fellow depending on experience, qualifications and seniority. The ideal candidate would have the following skills, with some flexibility depending on experience:

1. Excellent knowledge of basic data analysis in Stata, including experience with large datasets and the production of graphs, tables, etc. The ideal candidate would also have knowledge of econometric methods.

2. Excellent writing and synthesis skills, including the ability to summarise complex research in non-technical policy briefs and experience with literature reviews.

3. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-site environment, with lots of interaction online.

4. Some knowledge of tax and development, ideally including some knowledge of tax administration in developing countries and/or experience analysing administrative data.

5. Ideally some experience working in / on countries in the Global South – and particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa – though this is not a strict requirement.

6. Ability to work independently, and to manage priorities and time effectively.

7. The ideal candidate would hold a Master degree or a PhD in economics or related disciplines. Candidates with a PhD should expect to be hired in a post-doc position.

Candidates are encouraged to send their CV to ICTD’s Research Director, Giulia Mascagni (g.mascagni@ids.ac.uk), and should not hesitate to ask any questions about this role.
