Cunnison soldiers
Following a lead from my cousin, George Cunnison, I have discovered some information relating to the Cunnison soldiers.
I posted a message on a website which has a forum on soldiers serving in the Great War.
http://www.1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/
I asked about Cunnison soldiers and received the following information:
John Hume Cunnison
enlisted at the age of 16 in the 2nd Batt. KOSB. Regimental number: 7842
He continued in his army career with the Royal Engineers. Regimental number: 606170
Later, in the Royal Defence Corps, his regimental number was 93114.
In each regiment he was a Private.
John Hume Cunnison's medal card index can be downloaded from the National Archives website
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...;resultcount=14
The NA website also lists three William Cunnisons as follows:
1 William Cunnison, Quartermaster Sergeant 2 then Captain, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
2 William Cunnison, Private S/2165, 1st Royal Highlanders (1st Black Watch) (killed in action 04/10/1914)
3 William Cunnison, Private 19742 Royal Scots then Private 606169 Royal Engineers
Given that #3 joined the Royal Scots and was given a Regimental number one digit lower than the Royal Scots Regimental number of John Hume Cunnison, we can assume that this is our Uncle Will.
The Scottish War Memorial website shows a Thomas Cunnison, Private 2638, 1st Black Watch who was killed in action on
11/11/1914. He was born in Edinburgh.
