The British are largely responsible for bringing the tubers from South America to Euroipe, when they were quite unpopular, being seen as poor person's food. By early 1600 they were providing major crop in Ireland. but as they are based on cuttings/cloning with no genetic variation, it makes them vulnerable to disease.
