La Vita Nuova (Italian for “The New Life”), is a work of poetry and prose by Dante Alighieri, which was written in Italian, between 1292 and 1294. He wrote the work as he was inspired by a woman named Beatrice, who he first met when they were nine and who for him was the “ideal woman.” She died at a young age in 1290.
The Vita Nuova contains 31 poems; 25 sonnets, one balata, and five canzones-- the fifth one interrupted by Beatrice’s death.
