The Nile is the longest river in the world, flowing about 6,695 km (4,160 mi) long from the headstream in Burundi, Central Africa, northwards to its Mediterranean delta in Egypt.
The Nile is divided; it flows from Lake Victoria, as Victoria Nile, to Lake Albert in Uganda. From Lake Albert it flows as the Albert Nile further to South Sudan and through the South Sudanese swamps as the Bahr el Jebel. At Malakal the White Nile starts and it joins the Blue Nile at Khartou, where they come together simply as the Nile. The Blue Nile rises in Lake Tana, Ethiopia. The Nile flows further through Sudan and Egypt until it empties into the Mediterranean Sea.
The Nile supports the agriculture of Egypt and Sudan and is also used for hydroelectric power.
