Greece is the most southern country of the Balkan Peninsula and its capital is Athens, which is located on the southern coast. One fifth of Greece’s total land area is composed of islands, and in 2005 the population was estimated by the United Nations to be about 11,100,000. Southern Greece and its surrounding islands have a Mediterranean climate, and because summers are warm, a lot of tourists spend their holidays there. Greece’ beaches offer a variety of different watersports. Also, there are a lot of sights to see in Greece such as the Acropolis, Mt. Olympus, the Minoan ruins on Crete, and various others. Greek spawned quite a few well-known persons, among them being Homer and the Philosophers, Socrates and Aristotle.
