The Ganges is the most holy river to the Hindus in India. It is 2,510 km (1,560 mi) long and rises in the Himalayas, in India, and then flows southeast to the Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh. The fertile plains of the Ganges are highly populated. The main crops are rice, grains, oilseed, sugarcane, and cotton. Its basin supports millions of people, but the river itself is highly polluted.
