Alfred Russel Wallace was a British naturalist and geographer born on January 8, 1823.
He and Charles Darwin are cofounders of the theory of evolution. One of his papers got published with some of Darwin’s writings in 1858.
Wallace became a schoolmaster in 1844 at a school in Leicester, where he met Henry Bates. With him he went on an expedition to the Amazon three years later, but they separated after a while. On the way back the ship caught fire and nearly all of Wallace’s findings got destroyed. He, however, still reported about them in his first book Palm Trees, and his travel diary Travels on the Amazon and Rio Negro, both published in 1853. Wallace studied many different controversial topics besides the theory of evolution. In 1866 he married Annie Mitten and they had three children together. Wallace received various medals for his works throughout his life, as the Order of Merit, in 1908. He died on November 7, 1913, in England.
