St. Luke's Hospital

Thanks to a church rector named William Augustus Muhlenberg (1796-1877) an Episcopal hospital was established to deal with New York's poor. At first, the church itself took patients in, but in 1858 St. Luke’s Hospital at Fifth Avenue and 54th Street was opened. 1

“The hospital was a red brick, rectangular structure in the Early Romanesque Revival style, and included wings at each end. Twin towers flanked the central pavilion which contained a chapel.“ 2

St. Luke's Lutheran Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church. It is located on Forty-Sixth Street in the Theater District of Manhattan. The congregation is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The Evangelical Lutheran parish of St. Luke's was founded in 1850 and changed its location several times until it was finally able to consecrate its church building in 1923. The architects Tilton and Githens used a combination of stylistic elements of the neo-Gothic style and Art Deco. 1
