Southern States

The historic Southern States of the U.S include Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.1

That region is also called the American South and carries a particular historic and cultural heritage, which includes the early European colonial settlement “the doctrine of states' rights, the institution of slavery, and the legacy of the Confederacy during the American Civil War.” 2

Today, the modern definition of the American South always includes the states in dark red: Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. 1

The South provides its citizens with an immense and varied region,as well as several climate zones. It offers a healthy soil in which many crops can grow fairly easy. 2
