Newport

In Great Britain

Newport is the gateway between Wales and England. Its history goes back 2000 years, when the first Celts arrived and settled down. The city is located at the mouth of the River Usk which is, for centuries, has been one of the main attractions. Furthermore it is one of the best preserved Roman military sites throughout Britain, thanks to “the remains of barracks, bath house and an amphitheater in Caerleon” 1, a suburban town in the northern outskirts of Newport. 2 It is a vivid and divers city with an industrial heritage.

In the United States

Newport, Rhode Island, in Newport country, was founded in 1635 by religious refugees, originating from Massachusetts. The city was named after Newport in England 3. The city soon became “one of the most flourishing seaports in colonial North America” 4, thanks to its extraordinary harbour.

In the beginning, Rhode Island had five capital cities and Newport was one of them until 1900, when Providence was announced the sole capital. The U.S. Navy remains the biggest employer of the city. 5
