Mrs. Glenn

Mrs. Glenn is Joe Glenn's mother. She is a very dominant woman. Even the Baptist minster seems to be afraid of her 1. Also, Mrs. Glenn does not approve of Ruby and treats her in an condescending manner. “Whenever I [Ruby] did anything that wasn't quite right his mother would say how differently Joe would have done it. And she was forever telling me that Joe did not approve of this and that.”2

When Ruby wrote her letters to Joe, begging for forgiveness, Mrs Glenn, who seems to enjoy being in charge and exerting power over someone, prohibits Joe to respond.

She is a woman who only accepts her way and wants to be in control of everything. She is a “person who thinks [s]he knows everything and gives advice without someone asking for it.”3
