Mr. Devine

Mr. Devine is a friend of Arthur Hackett. As soon as he found out about how his friend had treated Ruby Glenn, he felt obligated to help her. He is a gentleman and a man of character, because he is able to tell right from wrong and does not side with his friend just because of the fact he is his friend. Although Ruby is refusing to accept his help, he doesn't give up that easily. He senses it is her pride talking and declining his offer, not the woman who desperately wants to go home.

The name Devine originated in Ireland means fawn or stag 1. Also, that name sounds like the word divine, which means godly. And since a stag is the king amongst the forest animals, and “God Is King over All the Earth”2 (Psalm 47), watching over the ones in need, the name suits the character of Mr. Devine.
