Freemasonry

The legendary roots of the Freemasons date back to antiquity. It can be proved that today's Freemasonry in the Middle Ages originated from so-called stonemason brotherhoods, the so called associations of those artisans ("Freemasons") who earned their living with the construction of cathedrals. 1

The prerequisite was an unusually high level of education. Building a cathedral with medieval means was a masterly performance, builders were sought-after professionals. In such great demand that they were constantly on the move, at a time when only a few people got to know more than their village. 2

The Stonemason brothers were, in a sense, the first non-noble and non-spiritual cosmopolitans. They acquired a horizon that extended far beyond national borders, with a cross-border network of local construction huts (lodges) in which the custom was taught and the expertise passed on to new brothers. 3
