Cotillion

The cotillion is a french country dance which became very fashionable around the late 18th-century and early 19th-century. That social dance was especially trendy in Europe and North America. This type of dance was favored to conclude a ball as its final dance. In the original cotillion, four couples dance in a square formation. ¹

“During the 19th-century, cotillion patterns became more varied, and the dancing was combined with the giving of presents.“ ²

This dance was popular “in the best and highest circles of society, and many teaching manuals were published to help recall the vast number of changes that were invented.” ³
