Douarnenez

Douarnenez is a town in the Finistère département of Brittany. The population of the town is 15,827 (1999). The city lies at the Atlantic Ocean on Douarnenez Bay. It was a meaningful fishing port in the past, but since that is fading away, it switched the focus on food processing, like fish canning. Another economically factor is the yachting harbor, which it has established.

Douarnenez is a pretty mythical city. In Breton folklore, it is said, that the legendary city of Ys lies under the waters of Douarnenez Bay. It's also associated to the story of "Tristan and Isolde", which resulted in renaming the Saint-Tutuarn Island to "Tristan Island" (an island close to Douarnenez). Worth mentioning is, that the small city has an impressive amount of old churches dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, such as the Church of Ploaré.[1]
