Bordeaux

Bordeaux is the capital of the department of Gironde in Aquitaine, which is located in the south-west of France. The Garonne River flows through Bordeaux, and there it connects with the Gironde estuary. With a population of 215,363 (1999), Bordeaux is the largest city of Aquitaine. Name givers of the city were the Celts who named it "Burdigala". During the Roman supremacy Bordeaux became the capital of the province of Aquitania. After the Romans, the city suffered from political inconsistency which endured until the dukes of Aquitaine reestablished the order in the region in the 10th century. Bordeaux became English in 1154 by heritage, and lasted being English until the Battle of Castillon (1453), where the French managed to defeat the English and, as a consequence, united the city with France.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Bordeaux even became the seat of the (provisional) government of France a couple of times. The first time was during the Franco-German War, when the French government was switched to Bordeaux as the Germans got closer to Tours. The second time was during the First World War, when the Germans were dangerously close to Paris. The third, and last time, the government was transferred, was during the Second World War. In June 1940 it was delegated first to Tour and then to Bordeaux. The city was heavily bombed by the Germans, and eventually occupied until August 1944, when the Allies were able to recapture it.

In 2007, the UNESCO nominated the historic center of Bordeaux as a World Heritage site. The city has many points of interest to offer. There is the Grand Théâtre (1775-1780), which is one of the most splendid theatres in France. Another attraction is the Esplanade des Quinconces being one of the largest squares in Europe. On the square is the Girondins monument and statues of Montesquieu and Michel de Montaigne.

The most important product, which has made Bordeaux prosperous and world-famous, is its wine. The Bordeaux wine is highly esteemed by wine experts and connoisseurs all over the world.[1]
