Mary Giles is a member of the New York high society. She used to be a friend of Mrs.
Lidcote before her exile in Europe and still sympathizes with her but is not bold
enough to show it in public, probably because she fears the consequences for
herself. She stealthily visits Mrs. Lidcote in her room at the Barkley´s house during
Leila´s dinner party. She follows the rules of society in pubic but is not herself
convinced of them.
