Horace Pursh is Leila´s ex-husband. He is a member of New York´s upper class and
is descended from a big, wealthy and influential family. His uncle is an assistant
secretary in the Cabinet. Horace Pursh belongs to the younger, more liberal
generation of upper-class New Yorkers. Divorce is no inexcusable aberration but a
normal incident to him. Although Leila left him for another man he has no bad feelings
towards her and is even willing to help her and her new husband to implement their
plans to move to Europe. He is engaged again and is going to marry a successful
novelist, the daughter of Bishop Thorbury.
