Middle-aged, bent over and has a friendly, thin face with a beard and his hair is grizzled.
Old friend of Mrs. Lidcote.
Belongs to the wealthy upper-class society of New York City.
He once fell in love with Mrs. Lidcote and asked her to spend her life together with him but she refused his proposal in order to protect him from the reaction of society
He still feels affection for Mrs. Lidcote
His character is portrayed in an ambiguous way:
On one hand, he is kind and understanding. He seems to stick to Mrs. Lidcote against all prejudices of society, he is rather open-minded and has a liberal attitude. (especially in the beginning of the story)
On the other hand, he is ashamed of being seen with Mrs. Lidcote in public, he behaves cowardly and dishonestly toward Mrs. Lidcote and even shows a lack of respect for her when he assumes her judgment of people and situations to be wrong and accuses her of causing her own ostracism. (especially towards the end of the story)
