John Singer Sargent was an American painter who was born in Italy. He painted portraits of members of the wealthy upper-class in both the United States and Europe.

The fact that Sargent is going to paint a portrait of Leila shows that she is an accepted member of the upper-class society despite of her divorce. It represents the general well-being of Leila and with that indicates the societal changes regarding marriage and divorce in New York City.
