Approximately in 1617, Bartolomé Estéban Murillo was born in Seville and died in 1682. He was a renowned Spanish religious and portrait painter.
In about 1645 in Seville, he painted a collection of 11 pictures about the history of the Franciscan order for a monastery bringing him fame right away. In his dramatic use of light and shadow, one can see the influence of Zurbarán.
Remarkable works by him include St. Leander, St. Isidore and Vision of St. Anthony all of which can be found in the cathedral of Seville and the Birth of the Virginwhich can be found in the Louvre in Paris.
In the years from 1670 to 1682, Murillo painted many of his major religious works, including many Madonnas like Raphael. However, in 1682, Murillo was working on The Marriage of St. Catherine for the Capuchin church of Cádizand, when he fell from a scaffold. Due to his severe injuries, Murillo died.
