The United States of America, also named America, is a country comprising 50 states. The fifty states are made up of 48 contiguous states and the state of Alaska and the island state of Hawaii, which is in the mid-Pacific Ocean. It is located in the Western Hemisphere on the continent of North America. It is estimated that the United States’ population rate reaches up to a number of 296,483,000; placing it at number three in population among the 193 nations in the world in 2005. The country’s primary language is English and most Americans are Protestants, Roman Catholics, or Jews with their monetary unit being the dollar.
America is bounded by Canada in the north, by the Atlantic Ocean in the east, the Pacific Ocean in the west and by the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico in the south. After Russia, Canada and China the United States is the fourth largest nation in the world as far as the area is considered.
Therefore, the United States has seven different time zones.
The United States’ physical environment varies from the Arctic to the subtropical, from rainforests to deserts and from mountains to flat prairies. Measured in terms of gross national product, the GNP, the United States is the world’s greatest economic power; although, the country is just a little older than 200 years.
The United States emerged as a world power in the 20th century and ever since World War II it has been one of the preeminent powers. In the 18th and 19th centuries, 60 million people immigrated to U.S. shores. Many driven by seeking escape from political persecution while others were drawn by the hope for a better life.
America has had 44 presidents with the first one being George Washington from 1789 until 1797 and the current president being Barack Obama since 2009.
The nation’s motto is “In God We Trust”.
