Devonport, or rather Her Majesty Naval Base Devonport is a naval base located in Plymouth on the southern tip of England. With an area which covers more than 650 acres it is the largest naval base in Western Europe and has been supporting the Royal Navy since 1691 (HMNB Devonport, 2020).

Devonport is also only shortly mentioned in the short story with the same function as Oxford: to present the background of Guy Dawnish. One of his uncles was in command at Devonport (Lewis, 1968, p. 638) which means he held some kind of higher office at the naval base and thus a member of the Navy.
