A parapet is a protective barrier along the edge of a bridge, roof or balcony. It provides more safety for people. In the past parapets were used for castles and town-walls. The origin of the word could be French or Italian “parapetto” and its first use was in the 16th century. “Parapetto” is composed of “para”, which means “protecting”, and “petto”, which means “chest”. “Petto” may arise from the Latin word “pectus”.
